With both these sides unbeaten in the league this season this game was always going to be a close affair. Town started brightly enough but on a very heavy pitch it was soon apparent that blood and guts would be the order of the day. Newmarkets first chance came ten minutes into the game when James Callard floated a free kick into the far post with Paul Summerskill just failing to connect with his head. After having to defend a number of corners Town opened the scoring from one at the other end when Lee Newton headed in on the goal line midway through the first half. With the game toing and froing, full backs George White and Jack Saunders defended solidly throughout against the Willingham attack whilst another of Towns notable efforts was a thunderous strike from Newton which was turned away well by the keeper as the score remained at 1-0 into the break.

Within seconds of the restart the home side were back on terms but Town picked themselves up well. On the hour Chris Palmer pulled off a flying fingertip save but most of the action was centre field where Newmarket to a man battled on through the mud. With the game entering the closing stages, conceding a late goal would have been harsh to either side, unfortunately for Town they were on the receiving end as a long ball caught out the defence and Palmer was beaten one on one. Town might still have equalised just seconds later but Summerskill hit his shot into the keeper from inside the six yard box. A disappointing outcome for Town but this league has a long way to run just yet!

An impressive second half performance saw Newmarket run out comfortable winners at the end of this match. With a strong wind in their faces for the first half Town knew they had to be patient in the attack and set about shoring up the midfield with Paul Summerskill and Lee Newton providing good protection of the back four. Regular substitutions enabled Town to close the opposition down quickly with Reece Debenham and James Callard working particularly hard out on the flanks. Neither goalkeeper was troubled though in a goalless first half.

Town came out in the second half expecting a different game and changed to a more attacking formation. Warren Reddick showed some nice touches in midfield and Kieren Raja came on to bolster the frontline. The scoring was opened ten minutes into the second half when Summerskills searching ball into the box was not dealt with by the visitors and ran through to Callard to slide in at the far post. Town continued to push forward and went close from Alex Marshall and Jack Saunders before Raja extended the lead with a flicked header over the advancing goalkeeper. A minute later Newmarket won a free kick 25 yards out and Newtons low drive was well left by George Cummins and found the corner of the net to put Town 3-0 to the good. Just before the end a Cummins corner was curled into the far post for Summerskill to head in on the line to round off the scoring.

U16 League Cup 2nd Round

Newmarket went down to their first defeat of the season in this League Cup second round tie. Both sides tried to play a passing game of football but heavy overnight rain made it difficult and the condition of the pitch worsened as the game went on. It was twenty minutes before the deadlock was broken when Reece Debenham found the corner of the net through a packed penalty area after the keeper had fumbled a cross from the left. The lead was short lived though as the home side hit back 3 minutes later with the Town defence static. Paul Summerskill almost regained the lead for the visitors just before half time when he sent a header just wide from a Mark Bloxham free kick but the scores remained level at the break.

Bloxham had a header cleared off the line with Alex Marshalls follow up wide of the target. Saffron Walden remained dangerous whenever they pushed forward and went ahead when the Newmarket back four again allowed the home sides striker to steal in and head past Chris Palmer. A goalmouth scramble followed another Newmarket corner with Tom Williams unable to bundle the ball over the line. Newmarket committed men forward in the latter stages in search of an equaliser and saw a George Cummins shot go just wide then a jinking run from Summerskill produced a great cross for Gino Livoti, arriving just too late to finish off the move. With five minutes remaining Towns fortunes were dealt a cruel blow when a routine back pass squirmed underneath the boot of Palmer and into the path of a grateful striker to tap into an empty net.

A comfortable victory saw Town maintain their position at the top of the league. James Callard showed Newmarkets early intent leading the attack down the left side with Jack Saunders working well in his support. With Callards excellent deliveries into the box, George Cummins and Alex Marshall both had early chances to score but the opener came from Towns first corner on 20 minutes when Marshall ran in to head powerfully home. This settled Newmarket who then began to move the ball around more confidently. Warren Reddick had a firmly struck 25 yard effort turned around the post by the keeper but Town were generally guilty of slack finishing after some attractive approach play. The visitors though had their moments up front and Chris Palmer did well to save one on one but minutes later an equaliser came their way after a good attacking move found the Town defence napping and take the game into half time all square.

Newmarket imposed themselves on the game in the second half as first Kieren Raja threatened straight from the restart then a neat one two between Cummins and Lee Newton saw the latter find the net from the edge of the area. Callard made it 3-1 on 45 minutes with a shot into the top corner and Cummins extended the lead still further when he netted a loose ball in the box to make the game safe. The home side were enjoying the space afforded to them and at times may have over complicated things in attack but the fifth goal was simplicity itself as Rajas header in behind the defence saw Cummins time his run well into the area where he had time to place his shot past the keeper.

Newmarket came out on top again in this the third meeting between these sides this season. Playing against the wind and slope in the first half, Towns defence had to work hard with George White putting in a solid show at right back and Mark Bloxham battening down the hatches with Tom Williams in the centre. Goalkeeper Chris Palmer looked assured for Town but it was only from their set pieces that the home side threatened his goal. Newmarkets first sight of goal came after 10 minutes when Alex Marshall sent a shot over the bar then minutes later a defence splitting through ball from Paul Summerskill had Marshall shooting just wide. Just as half time was looming, a long throw from Lee Newton was flicked on from the head of Williams and Summerskill was there in the six yard box to give Town a timely half time advantage.

The second half saw Newmarket dominant as they took the game to their opponents. Warren Reddick forced a great save from the keeper but moments later the keeper turned villain when he miss kicked under pressure from Newton and gifted the Newmarket player a tap in to make it 2-0. George Cummins shot over after being released by Newton then a quick upfield ball from Palmer dropped into the stride of Cummins in behind the defence but his first time volley over the keeper came back off crossbar. Town continued to make the running and the only surprise was that the scoreline remained unchanged as first Kieren Rajas effort rattled the bar only for Summerskill to do the same on the follow up with Cummins firing the second rebound over the top. In the closing stages both Bloxham and Newton had goal bound headers cleared off the line as Town secured the points with a convincing second half performance.

Pye U16 Youth Cup 2nd Round

Newmarket progressed in the Pye U16 Youth Cup after a closely fought contest. The home side made the early chances but found Towns Chris Palmer in good form between the sticks and the centre back pairing of Tom Williams and Conor Bursford dealing well with Sohams direct approach to goal. George Cummins went close to opening the scoring for Town on 15 minutes when shooting just wide and Soham missed when gifted a free header from one of the many dangerous free kicks awarded their way throughout the game. Some over-zealous refereeing meant four yellow cards were brandished in a game that didn't warrant such heavy handedness but Newmarket stuck to the task and forced the opening goal on the half hour when a mix up in the Soham defence saw a defender steer the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Newmarket started the second half strongly with both Kieren Raja then Alex Marshall breaking through the back line to fire wide. Cummins was then denied twice by some good goalkeeping and James Callard narrowly missed converting Reece Debenhams cross to the far post before Soham grabbed an equaliser somewhat against the run of play. Town had to settle again as the home side pressed on but it was to be Newmarkets day when five minutes from time Callard made space for himself inside the area and shot low beneath the keeper to send his side through to the last sixteen.

Newmarkets 100% start to the season came to an end after surrendering a two goal half time lead. Town got off to a flier when straight from the kick-off, Paul Summerskill was found on the edge of the area and allowed a shot on goal which the Hemingford keeper spilled at the feet of Kieren Raja who gratefully placed the ball in the net with just ten seconds on the clock. Minutes later Lee Newton almost doubled the lead when his header was cleared off the line as Town continued to force the pace. The visitors looked to be handling the adverse conditions the better and on twenty minutes made it two nil when a firmly struck cross from the right went skidding across the face of the goal for James Callard to meet sliding in at the far post. Slowly though the home side began to come more and more into the game and by half time Town had had to defend well to keep the score line in tact.

After the break Alex Marshall had a chance to extend Newmarkets lead but it was Hemingford that were making most of the chances. Chris Palmer got down superbly to save one effort off his line but could do nothing with Hemingfords first goal which looped into the net. Five minutes later the scores were level when a long shot came in low from outside of the area and skated past Palmers outstretched glove. The home side were now bouyant and Town had to dig deep to stay on terms with Callard, Summerskill and Tom Williams putting in some sterling effort as the pitch got heavier . There were chances to score at both ends of the field but a draw being a fair reflection of the game.

U16 League Cup 1st Round

Newmarket ran out comfortable winners to book their place in the second round of the League Cup. On their travels for the first time this season, Town started the game in lively fashion with Paul Summerskill and Lee Newton quickly establishing superiority in the midfield. The visitors found it hard though to find the final telling pass and had to wait until the twentieth minute before breaking the deadlock when Kieren Raja combined with James Callard down the left side and whipped in a cross to find Alex Marshall arriving on cue at the far post. Callard almost made it two a minute later then on the half hour Newton sent a well struck effort just over the top.

Early in the second half Warren Reddick got forward from the back and went close with a long range effort but on 53 minutes a rare lapse in the Town defence allowed the home side to equalise with their first clear cut chance of the game. Newmarket were stung into action as Fulbourn survived a goal mouth scramble and a Newton header brushed the outside of the post. Five minutes later Reddick again picked up the ball and carried on into the area to shoot low beneath the keeper to restore Towns lead. A penalty appeal then went unheeded as Marshall looked to be upended by the keeper but the lead was extended to 3-1 with 10 minutes left when Callard burst through the defence to place his shot inside the far post. Newmarket were good value for the win and finished the game strongly with a final flurry of corners and a delivery from George Cummins which Summerskill somehow put over the bar from inside the goalmouth.

Newmarket played host to newly promoted Ely and though they recorded another victory the win was less than convincing. A lacklustre Town saw their early moves broken down and lost out frequently to the second ball as the visitors made the more determined start. Reece Debenham again showed the way for Newmarket with his energetic tackling and gradually the home side took control. With twenty minutes gone George Cummins sent over a cross which found James Callard in the area and he slotted home the opening goal. Warren Reddick got his head on another driven cross from Debenham just before the break but Town had to settle for a 1-0 half time lead.

The early part of the second half saw Ely threaten from their set pieces but a reshuffle in the Town formation midway through the half almost payed off immediately when Kieren Raja, having moved up front chased down a long ball from Cummins but placed his shot just wide of the post. A minute later Newmarket did extend their lead when Cummins picked up a loose ball in the box and spun round to find the corner of the net. Newmarket continued to turn the screw and moments later Raja was tripped in the box and amid the calls for a penalty a Cummins shot was cleared off the line and the follow up rifled onto the cross-bar. Towards the end, with Newmarket looking good for the points man of the match Debenham carried the ball from deep in midfield through into the area before setting Lee Newton whose shot flew narrowly over the bar.

Newmarket made it two wins from two after this local derby but were made to work hard for the points. The game started with Town passing the ball around freely and a cross driven over to the far post by James Callard signalled their early intent. A physical Soham side though began to get a hold in the game and had full backs Jack Saunders and Kieren Raja working to earn their keep. Eleven minutes into the game following another of Callards forays down the left, Lee Newton received the ball on the edge of the area and a sweet left foot drive on the half volley found the net to open the scoring. Soham continued to get forward though but the home sides stingy defence ensured Chris Palmer was rarely troubled in the Town goal. Paul Summerskill contributed well in midfield on his debut and was involved when Warren Reddick almost scored from close in on the half hour. Just before the break Newton outdone his earlier effort when he found himself with time on the ball and spotting the keeper just off his line sent over a pinpoint chip into the net from 35 yards out.

The second half proved to be a non-event with neither goalkeeper having to be called upon. With the afternoon heat taking its toll on the preceedings Newmarket were forced to make regular substitutions but closed the game out well enough for a deserved victory.

Town got the season off to a winning start with a confident performance though with better finishing should have recorded a more comprehensive scoreline. The home side, under new management got off to a bright start and moved the ball around well to carve out some early chances and six minutes into the game Lee Newton sent George Cummins through into the box to open the scoring. Whittlesford worked themselves into the game and earned themselves a series of corners which Town dealt with comfortably. Mark Bloxham and Tom Williams were immovable at the heart of the defence and Reece Debenham busied himself turning defence to attack on the right hand side. Town doubled their lead on 25 minutes when another flowing move was finished off well by Newton and the best move of the game came just before half time when Chris Palmer released the ball quickly from goal to Tom Bunting to combine with Warren Reddick, Debenham and Cummins for Newton to fire just wide.

A goalless second half saw Newmarket consolidating their lead with some no-nonsense defending and James Callard providing a good outlet to carry the game to the opposition. Alex Marshall looked dangerous up front on his debut and showed signs of striking up a good partnership with Cummins and although Town missed chances to put the match beyond the visitors reach the outcome never looked in doubt.
